There is a "mathematical need" to secure the U.S.-Mexico border due to the amount of immigrants coming over, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday.
"Texas wants to ensure that we secure the border," Abbott told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" Monday, regarding adding National Guard troops at the border.
"You need to understand that there is a mathematical need for this, because the people coming across the border have increased dramatically, more than 200 percent month on month in the month of March, of what it was the year before," the Republican governor said.
"What we have seen in the past is, when we do add these National Guard, it has a meaningful impact in reducing the flow of people coming across the border," Abbott said.
Part of the job is to put drug cartels and "coyotes" that bring people across the border out of business, Abbott continued, and "whenever we are able to ramp up the support on the ground, it puts them out of business, and it's going to make the border a far more secure place."
More assets such as the National Guard are needed as well as a physical wall because "there are certain regions where it's going to be more difficult than others to place the wall, and that's precisely why we need more assets on the ground."
The National Guard will take over some Border Patrol functions and "we will now have more front line Border Patrol, patrolling the region, keeping it safe, making sure we're going to have the boots on the ground, as well as the technology and the assets on the ground.
"This is going to be a virtual and personnel wall to make sure that the country is going to be more secure at this time," he added.
"This is going to free up more Border Patrol to engage in the apprehension and arrest of the people who are coming across the border," Abbott added.
