Donald Trump should drop out of the presidential race if he doesn't get 50 percent of the vote in his home state of New York, according to Ted Cruz's campaign manager.

Jeff Roe, Cruz's campaign manager, made the comments on ABC News' Powerhouse Politics. He called on Trump to exit the race "like everyone else has when they don't win their home state in dramatic fashion."

However, Roe joked that he did not expect Trump to take his advice.

"I'm assuming Donald is very strong in his home state," Roe said.

Cruz is looking toward swaying voters in "orphan districts" that have little GOP participation. "Hopefully," Roe said, "we'll come out with a good cut of the delegates there."

Roe also defended Cruz's use of the term "New York values." He said, "It's a big city, liberal government that does a lot of crazy stuff and their values are not in touch there as they are in other places."

"The liberals there are different creatures."

Roe said Cruz could "absolutely" reach the 1,237-delegate threshold he needs. He said New York is like playing an "away game" and "there's a lot of ball left to be played."

Cruz needs 87 percent of the remaining delegates, while Trump needs 60 percent. Roe looked ahead to California, which offers 172 delegates.

"You put a two-thirds whooping on somebody, a lot of things can happen."

This isn't the first time Roe has zinged Donald Trump. He asked if Trump had "ever had psychological eval?" in a tweet:

Some GOP donors who are aiming to defeat Trump are looking into supporting Cruz, reported the New York Times

"Lots of people are giving him a second look," said New York investor John W. Catsimatidis. "People are scared of Donald Trump, that's why.
