House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., on Tuesday slammed Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer for his criticism of President Donald Trump over his handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
The Republican congressman told Fox’s “American Newsroom” that Schumer needs to stop “hoping that bad things happen for the economy. President Trump is doing his job at, No. 1, keeping Americans safe. That is his top job and he has done that incredibly effectively.”
Schumer released his statement Monday after Trump made comments on the crisis, saying “What was glaringly missing from President Trump’s press conference was how he is actually going to combat the spread of the coronavirus and keep the American people safe. It seems President Trump is more focused on the stock market than addressing this pandemic.”
The Democratic senator added that Trump has so far made statements “belittling the problem, contradictory statements, statements that don’t address the problem," according to Fox.
Scalise shot back that the president is “concerned about making sure families are able to have a strong economy and we got a strong economy. There are troubles right now that are related to the uncertainty with this outbreak and we need to continue making sure that CDS, HHS, all the federal agencies, have the tools they need to properly respond - to test and to ultimately find a vaccine.”
Scalise stressed that the Democrats have to "stop the political games that some of these folks are playing here on the Hill and focus more on doing their job and, frankly, there’s more left to be done."
