Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had nothing but praise Wednesday for President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address, calling it "inspiring" and a "home run."
"I also think [Trump] understands, and this is something Reagan came to understand – last night was a home run – you don't need to go out and also sell popcorn and also go down and sell beer, you need to be the star," Gingrich said on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" the day after Trump's speech.
"I think he has got to drive these themes. But I think he ought to stay presidential. He was very good in Davos at being president of the United States. He was very good last night as president of the United States. He doesn't need to revert to being candidate Trump," the former congressman continued.
In an op-ed for Fox News released Wednesday afternoon, Gingrich described Trump's address as "wide-ranging," "visionary," and "inclusive," while criticizing "how deeply the Democrats reject everything uttered by President Trump."
"Oh, I think 'Americans are dreamers, too' – I think it was the best line," Gingrich told "Fox & Friends." "Some Democrats are so idiotically out of touch with reality that the idea of describing all of us collectively as dreamers is offensive to them because then they would have to be pro-American."
