Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Kent on Tuesday told House investigators he was ordered by a supervisor to lay low after he raised complaints about Rudy Giuliani's efforts in Ukraine undermining U.S. foreign policy, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, D-Va., told reporters following the hearing.
Kent also testified acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney during a meeting in May told officials that three people would be in charge of Ukraine policy: Energy Secretary Rick Perry, U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland and special U.S. envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker.
Kent testified at the closed-door meeting despite being ordered not to testify by the State Department. The House probe centers on whether President Donald Trump abused his power to attempt to influence the 2020 presidential election.
The investigation centers on a July 25 phone call n which Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to investigate the overseas business dealings of Hunter Biden, son of Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden.
Kent had previously served as deputy chief of mission in Kyiv and spent years working on anti-corruption efforts across Europe.
