Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s re-election bid appears to be stumbling. A new poll shows that the Michigan Democrat’s lead has slipped to just five points in a head-to-head matchup with challenger Pete Hoekstra.
Stabenow now leads the former Republican congressman 45 to 40 percent. The
Marketing Resource Group poll of 600 likely voters from March 14-19 shows Stabenow ahead of other potential GOP challengers, leading Clark Durant 45 to 34 percent.
Other polling firms’ previous surveys have shown Stabenow with double-digit leads.
“The first warning signs for then incumbent Senator Spence Abraham was his inability to break 50 percent in early polling with challenger Debbie Stabenow,” said Tom Shields, president of Marketing Resource Group Inc. “Six months ago, Stabenow led Hoekstra by 15 points and Durant by 23. Now she is stuck at 45 percent and is within striking distance of the leading GOP candidate.”
