Closing in on the 60-day mark until the election, the silly season of speculation is well underway about what cabinets might look like in a Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton administration.
However, The New York Times reports that the buzz is particularly one-sided toward Clinton's choices, especially on the national security side, given her track record as secretary of state and Trump being something of a mystery.
The Times reports that Clinton has a deep pool of candidates from which to pick:
- State Department employs and colleagues;
- President Obama administration;
- Republicans who have disavowed Trump.
"What makes Hillary different than almost any other candidate is that she knows a lot of people in the national security area," Dennis Ross, who served as a special envoy for Clinton in the State Department told the Times.
"There's a combination of familiarity and people she came to know and respect in different situations."
This is the speculation regarding people and national security positions in a would-be Clinton administration, according to the Times report:
- Jake Sullivan: National security adviser or Clinton Chief of Staff;
- CIA Director: Michèle Flournoy, former under secretary of defense, viewed as the favorite;
- Secretary of State: William Burns, former deputy secretary of state or Thomas Donilon, part of Clinton's transition team.
