The scheduled SpaceX launch is good politics for President Donald Trump, Axios is reporting.
It noted that last year, a Gallup poll marking the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, found six in 10 Republicans and independents, along with seven in 10 Democrats, said NASA does an excellent or good job.
And the website said private-sector spaceflight offers the promise of new economic – and literal – frontiers for Americans.
The launch also could cut down America’s dependence on Russia, which has provided the only way for U.S. astronauts to go into space for almost a decade.
Axios also pointed out that the Kennedy Space Center, where to launch is scheduled, is in Florida – one of the most crucial states for the president’s re-election.
“President Trump has breathed new life into space exploration and taken bold steps toward guaranteeing American space dominance," Trump campaign spokeswoman Sarah Matthews said.
Joe Biden also is pushing his involvement in the space program, arranging a press call with former NASA administrator Charles Bolden, crediting him with being an important advocate while serving as vice president.
SpaceX was founded by Elon Musk. The scheduled Wednesday launch will mark the first time the company has carried humans to the International Space State.
