Republican Miami Mayor Francis Suarez on Wednesday said that coronavirus cases in South Florida would peak by the end of April.
He made the comments despite coronavirus task force medical expert Dr. Anthony Fauci saying that the country has reached the "beginning of a turnaround” from the pandemic, reports Yahoo!Finance
As more testing has become available, the area has experienced a surge in reported coronavirus cases.
On Wednesday, alone, one coronavirus testing facility experienced a 33% spike in confirmed cases.
"Every time we feel like we can breathe easier, and we think that maybe we're over the worst of this, unfortunately, what we've seen with this virus is, we get scared back into apprehension and vigilance," Suarez said.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Florida has more than 15,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, including nearly 8,000 in South Florida.
Miami was placed into a stay-at-home order on March 24. Around the same time, Suarez asked President Donald Trump to suspend all flights to Miami International Airport.
A week later, the entire state was locked down, prompting health experts to criticize Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for his slow response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Suarez was also questioned for not calling for a stay-at-home order fast enough to help slow the spread of the virus. Then he tested positive for coronavirus himself.
"I'm hoping that with the antibodies I've built up in my blood, we can use that to create a vaccine or help people who have a severe case [of the virus]," Suarez said. "We're hoping that it will be a door that opens, and a call to action."
