SC Republicans Hot on Haley, Cool on Graham

By    |   Wednesday, 25 September 2013 02:23 PM EDT

Republicans in South Carolina love Gov. Nikki Haley, but their support for U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham is waning.

Some 70 percent of 500 Republican voters approve of Haley, according to a new poll conducted by Clemson University and reported in The State newspaper. Only 18 percent were negative about her.

And almost half of those polled said they would vote for Haley next year no matter who runs against her.

As for Graham's popularity among Republicans, only 53 percent approve of his performance in office, the poll found, with more than one-third having an unfavorable opinion.

GOP voters said they dislike Graham for a perceived lack of conservative values, for compromising too much with Democrats, and for his association with fellow GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

They also didn't like Graham's support of the Obama administration's proposal for a military strike against Syria in response to the use of chemical weapons on civilians.
