Leaders of the Christian social conservative movement are applauding Donald Trump's win in the presidential election, and now they want to see him make good on his promises regarding issues that matter to them.
According to Politico, Christian leaders have been meeting in and around Washington, D.C., to discuss Trump's victory.
"Donald Trump is not the candidate pro-lifers would have chosen, and he understood that, and he did outreach," March for Life vice president Tom McClusky said. "If he fulfills the promises he's made, he could be the most pro-life president since [Ronald] Reagan."
Trump, who surprised everyone with his quick rise to the top of the Republican primary lineup and then his resounding win over Democrat Hillary Clinton in the election, initially was not the candidate most Christians were hoping for. He's been married three times, as Politico notes, and his past comments about women don't necessarily reflect Christian beliefs.
Trump, however, has promised to nominate Supreme Court justices who are pro-life and have other conservative beliefs — which earned him the backing of social conservative leaders across the nation.
"From our earliest interactions, he had a very impressive command focus on communicating with and winning the support of evangelical leaders and voters," Faith and Freedom Coalition chairman Ralph Reed said.
Trump is Presbyterian, while Vice President-elect Mike Pence calls himself an "evangelical Catholic."
Trump also wants to halt government funding of Planned Parenthood, which provides, among other women's health services, abortions. Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill are ready for a "street fight" to continue funding the organization.
