Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., on Friday dismissed complaints that Democrats have been repetitive in their arguments in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial during an interview with Fox News anchor Sandra Smith.
Whitehouse was detailing the trial process on the morning of the fourth day of the trial when he repeated the word "grievance." Smith interrupted, "Well, I hear you repeating words senator, a lot of the criticism of the Democrats' case has been repetition ..."
"Well, that's how you do a case," the senator said. "You tell the jury what the evidence is. And then you go back and you tell the evidence how it fits into — how it creates the offense. And then you say how that fits against the law.
"A good prosecutor is using the same evidence in his opening, in the case-in-chief, and the closing arguments," Whitehouse continued. "So 'repetitive' isn't much of a sensible complaint."
The senator later added that repetition is a necessary part of showing the evidence for impeachable offenses.
"To the extent that the complaint we've heard is that there's nothing new, that takes a certain amount of brass when the White House has dedicated itself to making sure lots of new evidence that is available and out there that may even be in boxes can't be brought in," he said.
