Several Secret Service agents have criticized the White House for allowing President Donald Trump to place his security detail at risk by making a public appearance in an SUV while undergoing treatment for the coronavirus.
“He’s not even pretending to care now,” one unidentified agent, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told The Washington Post.
Another agent, one who works in the detail that protects the president and the first family, told CNN: "That should never have happened. The frustration with how we're treated when it comes to decisions on this illness goes back before this though. We're not disposable."
A third agent rebuffed the idea that Trump is putting his detail at risk, saying, "He's unconventional, but we get the job done."
But another agent said that the move “was simply reckless.”
White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said in a statement that "Appropriate precautions were taken in the execution of this movement to protect the President and all those supporting it, including (personal protective equipment). The movement was cleared by the medical team as safe to do.”
Dr. Saad Omer, Director of the Yale Institute for Global Health and a Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, tweeted about the incident: “This is an individual with an active infection in close proximity with two other individuals, in a vehicle with closed windows, performing an optional task (masks help, but they are not an impenetrable force field).”
