President Donald Trump is ready to do “what it takes” to bolster border security — including bypassing Congress and declaring a national emergency to build a border wall, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sunday.
In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Sanders was pressed by host Chris Wallace on Trump’s warning that a partial government shutdown could last for more than a year without funding for the wall.
“The president means what he says when he says that," she asserted.
Pressed by Wallace on whether Trump would be prepared to “go off on his own” to secure funding without congressional approval, she said he’s ready to do anything it takes as long as it’s legal.
“The president’s prepared to do what it takes to protect our borders, to protect the people of this country; he knows that the number one job he has as president and commander in chief is to protect his citizens,” she said.
“We’re looking at every option available,” she added. “Whatever action he takes will certainly be lawful… [He’s] not going to stop to do everything we can to make America safer and more secure.”
