Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders pushed back against President Donald Trump on Sunday, saying Sanders' own surge in the Democratic polls is bad news for Trump.
The Vermont lawmaker was reacting to Trump’s tweet about Sanders surging in the Des Moines Register/CNN poll released at the end of last week.
“Wow! Crazy Bernie Sanders is surging in the polls, looking very good against his opponents in the Do Nothing Party. So what does this all mean? Stay tuned!” Trump tweeted.
Sanders responded: “It means you’re going to lose.”
Sanders led the Iowa poll for the first time, just weeks before the Iowa caucuses.
“There’s no denying that this is a good poll for Bernie Sanders. He leads, but it’s not an uncontested lead,” pollster J. Ann Selzer, president of Selzer & Co., which conducted the poll, told the Des Moines Register. “He’s got a firmer grip on his supporters than the rest of his compatriots.”
Sanders garnered 20%, followed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 17%, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 16%, and former Vice President Joe Biden at 15%.
U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii and entrepreneur Tom Steyer polled at 2%.
The poll of 701 likely Democratic caucusgoers was conducted Jan. 2-8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
