More Gridlock Predicted for Obama Second Term

Monday, 05 March 2012 02:29 PM EST

If President Barack Obama wins a second term, liberals believe he will endorse same-sex marriage and launch a historic campaign to fight climate change. Conservatives see a spending spree and a crackdown on gun owners, The Washington Post reported.

However, win or lose, both scenarios are likely to remain just that. To enact any major changes, Obama would need a Congress that leans heavily left.

“I haven’t seen any evidence that he’s going to do anything in his second term that isn’t defensive,” Andrew Roth of the Club for Growth told the Post. “He’s got to defend Obamacare, and try and implement it. Against, you know, a lot of opposition. He’s got to defend Dodd-Frank [financial regulation], against a ton of opposition.”

The gridlock gripping Washington will not likely vanish with the 2012 elections.“Whoever is the president will have a very tight leash," Roth told the Post.
