House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday a property tax deduction has been added to the GOP's tax proposal as the chamber prepares to vote on the legislation.
Republicans have been criticized for excluding state and local tax deductions in the similar tax proposals that have been introduced in the House and Senate. Ryan spoke with Fox News and confirmed a property tax deduction was put into the House plan.
"We actually added back a $10,000 property tax deduction, in addition to the tax cuts that are already in the bill that everybody gets," Ryan said.
"Most people won't have to itemize. So what we've done is we added a $10,000 property tax deduction for these people in those high-tax states. Everybody gets it, but it's really the high-tax state people that would feel it the most, that deduction."
The tax proposal is expected to pass in the House Thursday when lawmakers vote on it, The New York Times reported. During his appearance on Fox News, Ryan shied away from predicting what the vote tally might be.
"I never do such things like that," he said. "I feel very good where we are, we're gonna pass this bill."
