House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday laid out the principles of what healthcare reform should look like.

Speaking at a press conference with Republican leaders, Ryan shared his pillars of healthcare:

  • "Freedom and flexibility" instead of "more mandates."
  • The patient-doctor relationship making decisions instead of more bureaucracy.

"Instead of all this uncertainty — instead of worrying about whether or not you have to find a new plan or a new doctor — you should have real peace of mind. That's what our healthcare system should look like," Ryan said.

Repealing and replacing Obamacare has been a focal point for Congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump since election season began.

"It is about rescuing people from this collapsing law, where the premiums are getting higher and higher, and the choices are getting fewer and fewer, to the point where people just have no choices left at all," Ryan said.

"It's also about building a stronger healthcare system for the country," Ryan told the GOP assembly. "Insurers should compete for your business, and treat you fairly."
