Rudy Giuliani on Wednesday defended Attorney General Jeff Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation, telling HuffPost that "I would have considered" doing the same thing.
In fact Giuliani, now a member of President Donald Trump's legal team, told HuffPost that he relayed that sentiment to the president last year.
"I would have considered it, sure," Giuliani told HuffPost. "I told the president at the time that I just didn't know what I would have done."
Giuliani said he also turned down the president's offer to be his attorney general.
"He offered it to me," Giuliani told HuffPost. "I didn't take it because I wanted to be secretary of state. I recommended Jeff as the perfect guy to do it."
Giuliani's comments came the same day Trump tweeted several times about Sessions' recusal, posting "I wish I did" pick someone else to be AG, a notion proffered by Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., on a morning show.
Though Trump "would have every right to ask him to unrecuse himself," Giuliani told HuffPost, the president should not fire Sessions.
"He could, but he shouldn't," Giuliani said. "If you fire somebody, even though it's legitimate, you're just going to raise a lot of questions."
