RNC's McDaniel to Newsmax: Trump Fight Energizing GOP Base

By    |   Tuesday, 04 April 2023 10:52 AM EDT

The legal fight against former President Donald Trump is energizing the Republican base, and pointing to more reason to defeat President Joe Biden and return control of the White House and Senate to the GOP, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel said on Newsmax on Tuesday.

"We know right now that the greatest crime in Biden's America is to be a Republican, and we saw it with parents going to school board meetings being labeled domestic terrorists and now with the former president being indicted on trumped up charges that we know wouldn't have been brought against any Democrats," McDaniel told Newsmax's "Wake Up America."

Trump will be arraigned Tuesday on as many as 34 felony charges involving alleged falsification of business records in connection with the reimbursement of hush money payments to adult film actor Stormy Daniels, according to sources, but McDaniel said the criminal investigation is politically motivated.

"I think Republicans recognize Democrats will use the levers of power against every Republican at any level, and we have to win back the Senate," she said. "We've got to win back the White House. We've got to keep the House and the only way we can do it do that is by getting out, and volunteering, and voting, and getting ready for 2024."

She also called it "crazy" that leaks have already come out, and pointed out that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is leading the Trump investigation, has taken this action as violent crime is surging in his city.

Because of the high-profile proceedings this afternoon, New York has "taken all the cops off the streets because of a misdemeanor charge that wouldn't even bring jail time if the president was convicted," said McDaniel. "It shows what the Democrats priorities are. It's not about, 'Let's get rapists off the street, or let's get murderers off the street'. It's about, 'How do we go after Republicans? How do we change the law to go after Republicans?'"

McDaniels said that "is wrong, and every American Democrat and Republican should be disgusted by this."

There has also been talk that the judge in Manhattan will impose a gag order on the case, which could forbid Trump from talking publicly about it, but McDaniel predicted Trump will "have a lot to say" either way when he addresses the nation Tuesday night.

"I don't know what the gag order would entail, but I think there's a lot that Republicans are worried about right now," she said. "They're saying, 'I can't believe they're doing this to President Trump.' But what are they doing to everyday Republicans … these are the types of things that are really frightening right now.

"Democrats will use power to persecute you for being a Republican. If it's not just cancel culture, it's now using the legal levers to go after you for being a Republican, and that's really frightening. If they can do it to Donald Trump, they can do it to anybody."

McDaniel called on Republicans to get involved, including volunteering for the upcoming election.

"We are energized right now," she said. "This is going to backfire on the Democrats as long as we get engaged and united and go and win in 2024."
