In 2008 Mitt Romney dumped nearly $45 million of his own money into his run for the presidency. This time, the former Massachusetts governor has yet to dip into his personal fortune,
The Washington Post political blog The Fix reported.
The Romney campaign of late has been burning through money to beat back challengers in the Republican primaries, raising questions about if and when he will go to his checkbook.
“This slog they’re in is costing them tons of money,” a Romney bundler told the Post. “They’ve got a fundraising challenge in the sense that they have to keep raising money to keep up with the spending. They’re not in the hole or anything, but it’s a struggle.”
A Romney campaign spokeswoman confirmed the candidate has not yet contributed to his 2012 campaign but would not comment about future plans. Regardless, Romney has been successful in fundraising. His campaign and the super PAC supporting him is set to spend $3 million on television spots in Ohio.
