Mitt Romney. Ted Cruz. Nikki Haley, three heavyweights of the former Never Trump movement who are now being bandied about as potential candidates in a Donald Trump administration.
Either Trump is embracing the adage "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" or he's just doing what president-elects are supposed to do when selecting their team — act presidential.
"He will look at Republicans, Democrats, independents, people who voted for him, people who voted against him," RNC strategist Sean Spicer told The Hill.
"As long as they are committed to bringing change to Washington and making this country better, than they can be part of this team."
To wit:
- South Carolina Gov. Haley met with Trump on Thursday, reportedly for the secretary of state role.
- Trump is meeting with former GOP presidential candidate Romney this weekend in New Jersey, reportedly for secretary of state.
- Texas Sen. Cruz met with Trump on Wednesday and reportedly told friends he'd like to be attorney general, a role Sen. Jeff Sessions was tabbed for Friday.
The New York Times reports the vitriol between Trump with both Romney and Cruz was legendary throughout the election season, with Cruz finally getting on board after the Republican National Convention.
Gov. Haley stood out as a prominent Republican who simply refused to endorse Trump and did not attend the convention.
Trump is proving that his list is inclusive of anyone who could help him succeed.
"He's willing to do the things that are necessary to succeed operationally and to bring the party together. We saw that first with his pick of Mike Pence for vice president," transition adviser Frank Cannon told The Hill.
