Targeting Ohio's Latino voters, Sen. Rob Portman is all set to release a new ad, in which the Republican shows off his Spanish-speaking skills, The Washington Post reports.
"Como su senador, mi prioridad es crear mejores empleos," Portman is heard saying as he looks directly into the camera and stands in a warehouse with busy workers behind him. "… Será un honor contar con su voto," which translates to: "As your senator, my priority is to create better jobs. … I'd be honored to have your vote."
Portman is running for a second term in the Senate against former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland.
His latest ad will feature on Spanish-language stations in Ohio, namely Univision and Telemundo, according to the Republican senator's campaign. Michawn Rich, a Portman spokeswoman, said the campaign will spend $250,000 on the ad.
The ad comes at a time when Republicans are struggling to broaden their appeal to minority voters after Donald Trump's bitter anti-immigrant comments.
Of the 395,000 Hispanics residing in Ohio, 199,000 are eligible voters, according to the Pew Research Center.
