North Carolina's senior GOP Sen. Richard Burr says he's ready to quit politics for good after his current bid for reelection because age is catching up to him.

"It's real simple: I'm beginning to get old," Burr, 60, a distant cousin of Alexander Hamilton slayer Aaron Burr, told reporters.

"I still look forward to getting back into the private sector before retirement even comes into the picture. I never envisioned retiring out of the Congress."

Burr, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, made the remarks in Cleveland, where he is attending the Republican National Convention, the Charlotte Observer reports.

The Tar Heel State lawmaker, who is being challenged by former Democratic Rep. Deborah Ross, says if he wins another six-year term, 2022 will be his swan-song year in politics.

"It helps me at home to announce it because I've got a bride who's put up with it for 22 years, and she would like to know that the light at the end of the tunnel is not a train," Burr quipped.

Burr is said to be a 12th cousin of Aaron Burr, the vice president and senator who, during a duel in 1804, fatally shot Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, now the subject of the smash Broadway show "Hamilton."

Before his senatorial run, Burr worked as a sales manager for Carswell, a lawn equipment distributor.
