The White House deflected questions on whether President Donald Trump has confidence in Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as reports swirl Tillerson might be on his way out.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said during Thursday's press briefing that until Trump loses faith in people who work under him, those people will keep their jobs.
"When it comes to questions like this, senior staff and Cabinet secretaries, when the president loses confidence, they'll no longer be here," Sanders said. "As the president said on the record, and several of you were in the room in the Oval [Office on Thursday], the secretary of state is here and we're working hard to get big things accomplished and close out what has already been a very strong and positive year."
When asked what Tillerson's future in the Trump administration is, Sanders would not take the bait.
"I think his future right now is to continue working hard as the secretary of state, continue working with the president, to carry out his agenda," she said.
Tillerson met with Trump at the White House on Thursday, and Sanders said Trump is listening to his top diplomat regarding all world issues, including the North Korean crisis.
"I don't believe there was a tipping point [in their relationship], considering they were sitting here in a meeting [Thursday] working hard to carry out the president's agenda," Sanders said. "I think the tipping point is trying to do the best they can to make sure that they're making our world a better place, making America safer, and they're working together to get that done."
