The White House has developed a plan to replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with Mike Pompeo, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, soon weeks, multiple media outlets reported Thursday, citing unnamed sources.

The report, first published by The New York Times, was quickly bolstered by reports form The Washington Post and The Associated Press.

AP ciity two administration officials. They were not authorized to publicly discuss internal thinking and spoke on condition of anonymity.

U.S. officials and individuals familiar with White House plans have spoken about the possibility of a broad shakeup in President Donald Trump's national security team. But the timing of such a change is unclear, AP said.

Also unclear is whether Pompeo has been approached about the Cabinet reshuffle, but another administration official said he is open to taking the job, accoprding to AP.

A senior administration official who spoke recently with Tillerson says the former Exxon Mobil CEO felt secure in his position and was focused on his State Department reorganization and other diplomacy matters.

Under the plan, developed by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas would be tapped to replace Pompeo at the CIA, the Times said.

The newspaper quoted unnamed senior administration officials as saying President Donald Trump had soured on Tillerson and was ready for a change at the State Department, probably around the end of the year.

The two men have aired striking differences in public.

The former ExxonMobil executive has also defended the Iran nuclear deal, which Trump last month disavowed.

The Times said it was not clear whether the president had given final approval to the reported cabinet changes.

Under the plan, which the paper said was developed by White House chief of staff John Kelly, Pompeo would be replaced at the CIA by Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas and an important Trump ally on national security issues.

That could leave Republicans with another seat to defend in the 2018 elections.

Material from Reuters, The Associated Press, and AFP was used in this report.
