Multiple Republicans are pushing back on President Donald Trump's insistence members of the party cheered when he criticized Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., during a conference meeting at the Capitol on Tuesday night.
Trump tweeted this Wednesday afternoon:
Three GOP lawmakers now claim Trump was lying and no one was cheering or laughing when he brought up Sanford, who lost in the recent Republican primary after Trump rallied against him. Trump reportedly called Sanford a "nasty guy" during the meeting.
As reported by Politico, Reps. Justin Amash, R-Mich., Ryan Costello, R-Pa., and Scott DesJarlais, R-Tenn., are speaking out.
Costello called Trump's claim "categorically false," according to Politico. DesJarlais told the news outlet there were "crickets" after Trump's remark.
Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., told The Hill: "I was very upset. It was very unnecessary and as far as I'm concerned, it was very rude. To make light of Mark Sanford is very unacceptable."
