Rep. Will Hurd: Trump's Wall 'Least Effective' for Border Security

Texas Republican Rep. Will Hurd said the wall President Donald Trump wants to build across the southern U.S. border is the "least effective" way to approach border security, The Hill reported Saturday.

"I've been very clear that building a wall from 'sea to shining sea' is the most expensive and least effective way to do border security," Hurd told The Hill.

Hurd, whose Texas district includes 820 miles along the border with Mexico, said instead, the U.S. should use methods that are technology-based.

"I think most Americans think that we are utilizing the latest and greatest technology along the border. We are not," he said. "A lot of the technology we are using is 20 years old."

Hurd made the statement days before Congress enacted a deal Friday, which Trump signed, that will keep the government operating through March 23, but does not make provisions for young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, known as Dreamers.

Trump announced in September he would rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), giving Congress six months to provide a solution to the issue.

Hurd, along with Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., is co-sponsoring a bill called the USA Act which promotes "smart" technology along the southern U.S. border and permanent legal status for DACA recipients.

"This is the only legislation that has real bipartisan support in the House and the Senate," Hurd said.

Hurd's bill faces an uphill battle, but he explained he thought "the president wants to see a fix for DACA."

Texas is the state with the second-largest DACA population, the first being California. About three-fourths of Hurd's district is Hispanic.

"I try to talk about solving real challenges, and not having hard edges," he said. "I believe ... that if the Republican Party in Texas doesn't start looking like Texas, then we're going to have problems in the future."
