Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus Wedensday doubled down on Donald Trump's attacks on the party's delegate process, saying that "you have to have a majority of the delegates" — and that rule is not going to change.
"He has a plurality of the votes, of the actual vote count, but you have to have a majority of the delegates," Priebus told Wolf Blitzer on
CNN. "That's what the rule is.
"I'm sorry I can't change the concept of a majority in the United States of America, nor would I want to," he said.
Trump has been bashing Priebus and the GOP delegate process since an embarrassing loss Saturday to rival Ted Cruz in Colorado via a process in which 34 delegates were awarded through a state party convention. No primary or statewide caucus was held.
The developer currently has 743 delegates, compared with 545 for Cruz and 142 for John Kasich.
To win the nomination, a candidate must have 1,237 delegates before reaching the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July.
"Donald Trump has a lot more delegates," Priebus told Blitzer. "He got a lot more votes and has a lot more delegates.
"At the end of the day, you need a majority of delegates on the floor of the convention in order to be the nominee.
"The point is you have to have a majority," he reiterated. "We have never had a nominee of our party that didn't have a majority. We've never had a president that didn't have a majority of the Electoral College.
"I don't know what's so complicated about a majority in the United States of America when our country was founded on the concept of a majority.
"There's not going to be any bending whatsoever on that rule."
