The Trump administration cut more than $16 billion in regulations last year, according to a new analysis.
The Washington Examiner reported on the American Action Forum findings, which show $16.4 billion in regulations were slashed. That resulted in a savings of $7.8 billion for individual taxpayers and businesses, since $8.6 billion worth of new rules were added in 2018.
Overall, 11 of the 16 top agencies in the federal government made cuts by eliminating old regulations from the Obama administration and years prior.
"Rulemaking activity increased notably in the second year of the Trump administration, following the trend of other recent administrations," the report reads. "The reason for this increase is straightforward: in its second year, an administration has more personnel in place and can advance rules begun in year one.
"The difference for the Trump administration is that a significant portion of regulatory activity this year was deregulatory."
The Department of Health and Human Services led the way by cutting more than $6 billion, followed by the Departments of the Interior ($2.2 billion) and Transportation ($2 billion).
Regulatory spending at a handful of agencies went up, topped by the Department of Agriculture — which raised its number to $5.2 billion. Most of that spending was related to a standard regarding the disclosure of bioengineered food.
