Rashida Tlaib, who is poised to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress, said Thursday that Democrats need to push for more than a "blue wave" to win in November: They need the whole ocean.

"I tell people that waves come and go," Talib told CNN's "New Day." "What I mean by that is we need to be inspiring a whole new generation of people that have not been engaged in our political system and in our government."

Tlaib, a former Michigan state representative, Tuesday won the Democratic nomination to run unopposed in November for a House seat held for years by former Rep. John Conyers, who retired in December at the age of 89.

"We  need to be inspiring a whole new generation of people that have not been engaged in our political system and our government," she said Thursday. "I think that has been what is really disconnected with Congress right now and the American people."

Tlaib also appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," where she called President Donald Trump the "bat signaler" for women.

"We have to push forward," she said. "People laugh at me when I say 'clear the room, boys, it's time for us.' I don't care if you're a Democrat or a Republican woman, if you put us in a room to fix and deal with the gun crisis, we would do it in a matter of a few hours."
