Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. said Thursday that he disagrees with his fellow libertarian, Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., who called for President Donald Trump to be impeached.
In an interview with Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” on Thursday, Paul said that the Russia investigation has “un-libertarian” origins, accusing the then-heads of the FBI and U.S. intelligence organizations of “an abuse of power.”
He added, "I think they took this great power we entrusted with them to spy on foreigners and they directed it against Americans for partisan reasons. So, I think this has to be investigated and I think it’s wrong for any Republican to think, 'Oh gosh, this is a legitimate investigation.' I think it’s a very partisan investigation."
Amash has argued in recent weeks that Trump should be impeached based on special counsel Robert Mueller’s report. He joined Democrats in pushing for impeachment following Mueller’s public statement on his investigation, in which he said that Justice Department policy prohibits charging a sitting president with a crime.
Paul said in conclusion that he doesn’t think other Republicans will support impeachment.
