Sen. Rand Paul is sitting pretty in financial terms in his bid for re-election, having amassed a $2.2 million war chest.

The Kentucky Republican is facing Democrat Jim Gray, the mayor of Lexington, who has just over $1.1 million in his own campaign coffers.

Paul got off to a slow start in his re-election bid this year because of his run to become the GOP presidential nominee. He ended his quest for the White House in February.

Paul's campaign is "extremely pleased" with its fundraising efforts, his spokeswoman Kelsey Cooper told NPR affiliate WUKY-FM.
