Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul's top digital strategist is working on the re-election campaign of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, The Jerusalem Post has reported
Vincent Harris, a 26-year-old based in Austin, has been working for Netanyahu for more than six weeks and has already made two trips to Israel.
Netanyahu is facing a difficult bid for a fourth term as prime minister.
Harris has insisted that he has not been sent by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell or Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, two of his previous clients, according to the Post.
"I have not spoken to Sen. Cruz or to Mitch McConnell about my job here," Harris told the Post. "My Israeli work is completely separate from my work in the U.S., so what is being reported is not true. I love Israel, and I am excited to be here to help the Likud and the prime minister use digital media in an effective and forward-looking manner."
Harris specializes in implementing social media strategy in campaigns and aided McConnell in his re-election fight in 2014. He worked for Cruz in 2012. He has been working for Paul since November as his chief digital strategist.
Paul has faced criticism from conservatives in the past for his views on foreign policy. At one point in 2011 he proposed a budget that would eliminate all foreign aid, including assistance to Israel, but his subsequent budget proposals have included Israel.
There are other American operatives also contributing to the Israeli election.
Jeremy Bird, the national field director for President Obama's presidential campaigns is offering consulting services to a coalition of groups working to defeat Netanyahu, Yahoo News reported
Netanyahu's upcoming trip to Washington at the invitation of House Republican Speaker John Boehner continues to be the subject of controversy after he accepted the invitation to address Congress
and the White House hadn't been given previous warning.
President Barack Obama has said he will not be meeting with the prime minister during the March visit and a number of Democrats are considering a boycott of the speech.
