Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared Tuesday that the Windy City is a "Trump-free zone" and will remain open to all "Dreamers" despite the White House's decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
"To all the Dreamers that are here in this room, and in the city of Chicago, you are welcomed in the city of Chicago," Emanuel said in a statement. "This is your home and you have nothing to worry about."
Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that President Donald Trump was ending DACA, which allowed illegal immigrants brought to the country as children to remain in the United States and apply for work permits.
Trump is giving a gridlocked Congress six months to decide the fate of more than 800,000 young people who have been allowed to remain the U.S. under the program.
"Chicago, our schools, our neighborhoods, our city, as it relates to what President Trump said, will be a Trump-free zone," Emanuel said. "You have nothing to worry about.
Emanuel was chief of staff to former President Barack Obama, who created DACA by executive order in 2012.
"So, to all those who are part of what are referred to as DACA, or 'Dreamers,' you will always be 'Dreamers' in the eyes of the city of Chicago," he said, "because you have big dreams and we want to be a part of those dreams."
