Donald Trump is in the lead among nearly 50 percent of Connecticut's likely Republican voters for the state's April 26 primary, with John Kasich trailing by 20 points for second place and Ted Cruz placing third, while Hillary Clinton is in the lead with Democrats, a
Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday shows.
According to the poll conducted April 11-18 of 823 likely GOP voters:
- Trump, 48 percent;
- Kasich, 28 percent;
- Cruz, 19 percent;
- Undecided, 5 percent;
- May change their minds, 25 percent.
And among the 1,037 Democratic voters, Hillary Clinton has a strong lead over Bernie Sanders:
- Clinton, 51 percent;
- Bernie Sanders, 42 percent;
- Undecided, 6 percent;
- May change their minds, 18 percent.
The poll also found that the state's Republicans want an outsider for president, by 59-33 percent, and among those people, 75 percent back Trump.
Trump took most of the poll's subgroups:
- Men: Trump 51 percent; Kasich, 27 percent; Cruz, 18 percent;
- Women: Trump, 45 percent; Kasich, 30 percent; Cruz, 20 percent;
- Tea party voters: Trump, 62 percent; Cruz, 24 percent; Kasich, 12 percent;
- White Evangelicals: Trump, 37 percent; Cruz, 31 percent; Kasich, 30 percent;
- Voters 18-44 years old: Kasich, 39 percent; Trump, 32 percent; Cruz, 27 percent.
And in favorability ratings;
- Trump, 56-37 percent;
- Kasich, 58-18 percent;
- Cruz, 38-45 percent.
The poll carried a margin of error of 3.4 points for Republicans and 3 points for Democrats.
