Joe Biden has expanded his lead over President Donald Trump in battleground states Florida and Pennsylvania following the first presidential debate and the president’s COVID-19 diagnosis, according to a Quinnipiac Poll released Wednesday.
Additionally, Biden leads Trump in Iowa, 50-45 percent.
In Florida, Biden leads Trump 51 to 40 percent, a 6-point increase from a Sept. 3 Florida poll conducted by Quinnipiac where Biden led, 48 to 45 percent. The boost comes from Independents, who now support Biden by a 20-point margin compared to a 10-point margin.
Trump won Florida narrowly in 2016, edging Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton by 1.2 percent.
In Pennsylvania, Biden has a 7-point lead over Trump, 54-41 percent, compared to Sept. 3 when Biden led 52-44 percent. Pennsylvania voted Democrat in the six elections prior to 2016, when Trump won the state by 0.7 percent.
"In varying degrees, three critical states in three very different parts of the country come to the same ominous conclusion. The president's hopes for reelection are growing dimmer by the day," Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy said in a press release.
