The White House Correspondents' Association said Monday it "fully” expects reporters will continue to ask follow-up questions at presidential news conferences — pushing back on new rules limiting the practice.

"The White House Correspondents' Association had no role in crafting any procedures for future press conferences. For as long as there have been White House press conferences, White House reporters have asked follow-up questions," the group’s president, Olivier Knox, wrote in a statement.

"We fully expect this tradition will continue. We will continue to make the case that a free and independent news media plays a vital role in the health of our republic.”

The rules include a provision that limits reporters to asking one question — and only allows follow-up questions "at the discretion of the president or other White House officials taking questions."

The rules came following a decision Monday by the White House to restore White House access to CNN correspondent Jim Acosta.

The White House originally pulled Acosta's press credential after he refused to give up the microphone at a press conference on Nov. 7 as he tried asking President Donald Trump a question about the Russia investigation.
