President Donald Trump on Saturday continued his quest for fairer trade policies for the United States, saying the country "must, at long last, be treated fairly on trade."

"If we charge a country zero to sell their goods, and they charge us 25, 50 or even 100 percent to sell ours, it is unfair and can no longer be tolerated," the president said on Twitter. "That is not free or fair trade, it is stupid trade!"

On Friday, the Trump administration slapped tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

The administration is also renegotiating NAFTA, the 1994 pact with Canada and Mexico that Trump has slammed since he began his presidential quest in 2016.

He told reporters Friday that he might consider separate trade agreements with those nations.

"I wouldn't mind seeing NAFTA where you'd go by a different name where you make a separate deal with Canada and a separate deal with Mexico," he said outside the White House after announcing that the June 12 summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un was back on for Singapore.

"You're talking about a very different two countries.

"But I wouldn't mind seeing a separate deal with Canada where you have one type of product, so to speak, and a separate deal with Mexico," the president said.

"These are two very different countries.

"It's been a lousy deal for the United States from day one," Trump said. "We lose a lot of money with Canada and we lose a fortune with Mexico.

"It’s not going to happen like that anymore."

Trump later doubled down on the issue in a pair of tweets, including challenging The Wall Street Journal on its coverage:
