Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday warned President Donald Trump to not get "snookered" by North Korea, while slamming the administration's new tariffs on Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

"If you’re a great deal maker, be interested in the details," the Kentucky Republican told the Greater Louisville Inc. Congressional Summit in his home state, Politico reports.

McConnell's comments came before Trump announced that the June 12 summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un was back on for Singapore.

In the days leading up to the meeting, the six-term senator said that Pyongyang would very likely pursue "every effort they can to get sanctions and other relief, and give up as little as possible.

"It’s going to be quite a challenge."

To have the edge over Kim, McConnell said that "you have to not want the deal too much.

"If you fall in love with the deal, and it's too important for you to get it, and the details become less significant, you could get snookered," he said.

"We're all hopeful," McConnell added. "What would be wrong with having a denuclearized Korean Peninsula?

"But I think we're a long way from that."

The administration's tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum from the three nations took effect Friday.

President Trump originally imposed the duties in March, though he exempted countries until midnight on Thursday to allow for negotiations toward a better deal.

"It won't surprise you to know that I'm among those not happy about the prospect of a trade war," McConnell said, Louisville Business First reports.

"I don't think anything good will come out of a trade war, and I hope we pull back from the brink here.

"These tariffs will not be good for the economy, and I worry that it will slow, or impede significantly, the progress we're making economically," McConnell said.
