President Donald Trump has spoken with aides and advisers about firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions several times since the Russia probe began last year but feels the optics of doing so might not be worth the risk, according to a new report.
CNN cited multiple sources who made the claim, saying Trump has talked about firing Sessions as recently as the last few weeks. Trump's advisers have talked him out of the idea each time, but he refutes them by saying it is his "absolute right" as president to fire Sessions.
Still, Trump has resisted ousting Sessions because he feels taking that step could complicate special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.
CNN also reported that Trump thinks the effort to delegitimize Mueller and the investigation are working well.
The animosity between Trump and Sessions stems from the Russia investigation and Sessions' recusal from it because he played a role on the Trump campaign. Trump has repeatedly bashed the nation's top law enforcement official.
This week alone, Trump criticized Sessions in an interview, which led to Sessions issuing a statement that said the Justice Department "will not be improperly influenced by political considerations" on his watch.
Trump responded with a flurry of tweets Friday morning, which CNN reported came after Trump was angry over Sessions' Thursday statement.
