Seventy-seven percent of Americans approve of President Donald Trump's decision to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, while 18 percent disagree, according to a new CNN poll.

Here are highlights from the survey:

  • 53 percent approve of the way Trump is handling the situation with North Korea, while 35 percent. (A CNN poll in late March had found 43 percent approved of his handling of the regime and 49 percent disapproved).
  • 8 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of North Korea's Kim, while 82 percent view him unfavorably.
  • 47 percent say North Korea is a very serious threat to the U.S.; 33 percent see it as a moderately serious threat; 12 percent say just a slight threat and 6 percent don't see it as a threat at all.

The findings come as CNN reported U.S. officials are moving ahead with plans for a Trump-Kim summit to be held in Singapore.

The rest of the survey breaks down like this:

  • 38 percent see Russia as a very serious threat; 40 percent say it is a moderately serious threat; 14 percent just a slight threat and 7 percent don't see it as a threat at all.
  • 25 percent say China is a very serious threat; 40 percent see it as a moderately serious threat; 17 percent just a slight threat and 16 percent don't see it as a threat at all.
  • 59 percent see ISIS as a very serious threat; 25 percent as a moderately serious threat; 10 percent just a slight threat and 4 percent no threat at all.
  • 40 percent say Iran is a very serious threat; 35 percent see it as a moderately serious threat; 15 percent just a slight threat and 7 percent no threat at all.

The poll was conducted for the news network by SSRS. It surveyed 1,015 registered voters from May 3-5. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
