Despite Hillary Clinton leading the popular vote tally by more than 2.8 million (2.1 percent) – and growing – a majority of Republican voters actually believe Trump won the popular vote, according to The Washington Post.
A Qualtrics survey asked 1,011 Americans online: "In last month’s election, Donald Trump won the majority of votes in the electoral college. Who do you think won the most popular votes?"
Although just 29 percent of those surveyed believed Trump won the popular vote, the results varied greatly by party affiliation, according to The Post.
Among those believing Trump won the popular vote:
- 52 percent of Republicans.
- 24 percent of independents.
- 7 percent of Democrats.
Other categories believing Trump won the popular vote:
- 60 percent of Republicans with just a high school diploma (24 percent Independents, 7 percent Democrats).
- 55 percent of Republicans with some college (26 percent Independents, 12 percent Democrats).
- 37 percent of Republicans with a college degree (21 percent Independents, 2 percent Democrats).
