American voters do not believe they know Donald Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, very well, according to an
NBC News/Survey Monkey poll.
In the poll, conducted online from July 15 to July 18 among 3,646 who said they are registered to vote:
- 48 percent said they don't know enough to say whether they have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of Pence.
- 26 percent have a favorable opinion of Pence.
- 26 percent have an unfavorable opinion of Pence.
Republican voters who took the poll have a more favorable view of the Indiana governor. Forty-nine percent of them said their impression of him is strongly or somewhat favorable.
When asked if Pence is a good running mate for Trump, again the voters said they didn't have enough information.
- 53 percent said they don't know enough about Pence to say if he is a good or bad choice.
- 27 percent said he's a good choice.
- 18 percent said he is a bad choice for vice president.
Trump's choice of Pence as vice president did not affect most voters' decisions about whether to vote for Trump.
- 76 percent said it made no difference.
- 12 percent said they are more likely to vote for Trump because of Pence.
- 10 percent said they are less likely to vote for Trump because of Pence.
A survey by
Morning Consult said that Pence would be likely to gain support if, during his convention speech, he discusses his efforts to lower taxes and balance the budget in his home state.
