Just four days ahead of New York state's delegate-rich primary race, GOP front-runner Donald Trump has a commanding lead, while Ohio Gov. John Kasich is adding to his support, a new poll shows.
The
NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist survey released Friday afternoon finds Trump with a majority of likely Republican voters behind him.
Here's the breakdown:
- Trump: 54 percent
- Kasich: 25 percent
- Texas Sen. Ted Cruz: 16 percent
The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.
The pollster notes the Ohio governor's support is up 4 points from a survey released Monday, while Cruz sank 2 percentage points from the earlier poll.
According to the poll, Kasich is most competitive among more moderate voters, supporting him with 35 percent compared to Trump's 54 percent, and college graduates, who back him 32 percent to Trump's 48 percent.
Trump continues to lead in every demographic group in the New York poll, and among his supporters, seven in 10 say they strongly support him, the poll shows.
Politico notes that if Trump tops 50 percent of the vote Tuesday, he'll be awarded 14 of the state's 95 delegates, while the remaining 81 delegates will be doled out at the district level.
For example, any candidate with a majority in any of the 27 congressional districts gets all three of its delegates.
A total of 1,237 delegates are needed to win the GOP nomination outright.
