A new report claims abortion could be one of the major issues during the 2018 midterm elections and in the next two years of President Donald Trump's administration.
The Washington Post reported abortion is still a polarizing topic and Trump's pro-life stance has kept many on the religious right in his corner.
And with many states passing or trying to pass legislation that would ban abortion in some form, it is quickly becoming a prominent campaign issue.
According to data cited by the Post, 19 states passed 63 anti-abortion restrictions last year.
"It's a cultural message, not just a legal message, to the court," Charles Donovan of the Susan B. Anthony List told the Post.
In Ohio, for example, Republican state Rep. Ron Hood introduced a bill that would ban abortion in all forms, including when the mother's life is in danger. In several other states, Republican lawmakers are putting their weight behind antiabortion bills.
Since 2011, 33 states have passed abortion restrictions, the Post reported.
Abortion was legalized nationwide after the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. The court currently has five conservative justices and four liberals, but Republicans would likely need at least one more right-leaning justice on the bench in order to overturn Roe v. Wade. And even that would be an unknown.
Pro choice advocates, however, continue to defend the practice in the name of women's reproductive rights. Abortion provider Planned Parenthood, which receives millions of dollars in taxpayer funds every year, is even advocating for "a Disney princess who has had an abortion."
