A new report found that the federal government gave more than $1.5 billion to three major abortion providers over a three-year period, which is drawing fire from Republicans.

The Government Accountability Office report released Thursday looked at the financials of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), Marie Stopes International (MSI), and International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). The findings show that the agencies, which provide abortions and women's health services, received more than $1.5 billion in federal funding from 2013-2015.

The three agencies spent $410 million in federal funding during that same time period.

Reps. Diane Black, R-Tenn., Pete Olson, R-Texas, and Chris Smith, R-N.J., along with Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, responded by criticizing the practice of giving taxpayer money to abortion providers.

"I spent my entire career as a nurse fighting for the dignity of every human being, and I have witnessed the emotional, physical, and psychological effects abortion has on mothers," Black said. "All of us in the healthcare field took an oath to fight for life, and abortion destroys that.

"Abortion is not family planning. Abortion is family destruction, and the fact that $1.5 billion in taxpayer dollars is funneled to this industry is sickening. The American people deserve better."

Ernst said the amount of federal dollars provided to the organizations is "absurd," and noted that she introduced a bill to defund Planned Parenthood in 2015.

Olson and Smith agreed that Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers should not receive federal funds.
