"Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson has now endorsed Donald Trump for president — even though he backed rival Ted Cruz five months ago.
"I'll be enthusiastically behind him," Robertson told
DailyMail.com on Monday. "I'll be loyal to the Republican Party."
Trump welcomed Robertson's endorsement shortly after, on Tuesday, exclaiming: "Wow! Such a great honor to have Phil's endorsement."
"His son, Willie, has become a great friend of my son, Don. What a great family," the presumptive Republican nominee said.
In January,
Phil Robertson endorsed Cruz and slammed Willie's support of Trump by telling Sean Hannity on Fox News that "it could have been worse."
He explained on Monday that his evangelical Christian beliefs made him feel "safer" with Cruz, who dropped out of the race last week after the Indiana primary.
"I went for Cruz because I knew that he was a strict constitutionalist, and I know that he does vet his thinking through the Bible like I do — and so I thought, 'Hey, I can identify with this cat,'" he said.
"It was a way to share the good news of Jesus with people when I spoke on his behalf.
"But now, he's out," Robertson said. "Trump's in.
"So, I'll vote for him — no question."
