More than 124,000 people have signed an online petition to ban Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump from getting classified intelligence briefings.
"Tell Director of National Intelligence James Clapper: 'Withhold all classified national security briefings from Donald Trump,'" t
he CredoAction.com petition says.
The petition, which has a goal of 150,000 signatures, is based on
Trump calling on Russia to hack U.S. security, which Trump said later was a sarcastic remark. Walking back his comments is how he has received no repercussions "from racism to misogyny to xenophobia to inciting violence," according to the petition.
It concludes with a call to reject Trump from the briefings because of his comments.
"It's up to us to push back on this breach as much as we have pushed back on his hate," the petition reads.
Trump, Hillary Clinton, and their vice presidential runningmates will be invited to access the briefings on world crises and security threats,
intelligence officials said.
Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline
sent a letter to President Obama asking for Trump to be denied the briefings. Democratic Sen. Harry Reid has apparently gone a step further than calling on Trump to be denied briefings: He said Trump should be given
fake briefings.
Clinton's access to the briefings has also been questioned. House Speaker Paul Ryan asked Clapper to
deny her access, and Clapper refused. The Department of National Intelligence director said he would not keep briefings away from "any officially nominated, eligible candidate,"
according to CNN.
