Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., on Sunday batted back abuse of power charges against President Donald Trump, saying it’s his job to “root out” corruption.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Perdue said there was nothing wrong with Trump’s request of Ukraine President Volodymr Zelenskiy to investigate Joe Biden and his son’s dealings in that country.
“The president of the United States is responsible for rooting out corruption,” he declared. “We're giving money to a country that we are afraid is going to the wrong people, for the wrong reasons“[Trump] is asking for help to root out this corruption. He asked President Zelenskiy to actually talk to the attorney general about it.
“You can characterize that as talking about a political opponent,” he continued. “What he's talking about is an American citizen that was potentially involved in corruption. That's what this president was doing on that phone call.”
He also derided witnesses like Lev Parnas, an associate of Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, a “distraction.”
“This is a person that has been indicted,” he said. “Right now, he’s out on bail. He’s been meeting with the House Intel Committee. If the House felt like this information was pertinent, I would think they would have included him in this — his testimony in this information.”
